In a recent Reuters video, The Shipping Industry’s Net Zero Fuel Dilemma, Kenny MacLean, Chief Operating Officer of Peninsula, was interviewed alongside executives from the Marine Programme at the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) and Wärtsilä Marine. Together, they discussed the key problems facing the industry as it collectively progresses its decarbonisation journey.
The discussion highlights that there is no single, immediate solution. Shipping must balance emissions reduction with fuel safety, technical readiness, global availability and cost. While regulatory pressure is increasing, alternative fuels are developing at different speeds and with varying levels of infrastructure support.
Kenny MacLean explains that the transition will require a portfolio of fuel solutions, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Transitional options such as LNG are already in use, while longer-term fuels including green methanol, ammonia and hydrogen show promise but still face challenges around scalability, cost and supply chain readiness.
The interview also underlines that decarbonisation is as much a commercial and operational challenge as it is a technical one, requiring close collaboration across shipowners, fuel suppliers, ports, technology providers and regulators.
