As a corporate member of WISTA Singapore, the Peninsula Singapore office was represented by 8 of our local colleagues; 7 women and 1 man, who attended an International Women’s Day 2023 event, which was jointly organised by WISTA, WOMAG and WIMAR, three of Singapore’s leading industry-driven and volunteer-led women’s empowerment networks.

WISTA is an international networking organisation whose mission is to attract and support women, at management level, in the maritime, trading and logistics sectors, while WOMAG is a community of professionals committed to connecting women in agribusiness across Southeast Asia, and WIMAR is a community that provides networking, mentoring and professional development opportunities to both women and men in the mining and resource industry in Singapore.

The event, which was attended by 180 participants from 70 companies across agriculture, metals and mining, energy, shipping, and trading sectors, offered an interesting panel discussion and networking opportunities to explore activities, challenges and progress around diversity, equity and inclusion. The panellists, who were representing Scoular, Archer Daniels Midland, Swire Shipping and BHP, shared their experiences and opinions, including topics on reducing gender bias in the hiring process, collaborative partnership between women and men in the workforce, equal opportunities for women in management and C-suite, and flexible work policies. Despite being the only male panelist, Adrian Gasparian, President of Asia Scoular and a father of four boys, was very vocal and passionate about advocating for women in the workplace.

The event was well received by many women and men who were inspired to start acting on DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) to shift mindsets, behaviours and practices towards more equitable and inclusive leadership for individuals, teams and organisations.

In Peninsula we take onboard every opportunity to learn and move forward towards gender equity in the workplace and in life in general.
