Peninsula at SIBCON 2024: Key Insights on Marine Fuel Markets

Peninsula shared its industry expertise across two well‑attended panel sessions, attracting strong engagement from delegates.

Thought Leadership in Marine Fuel Markets and Risk Management

Peninsula’s expertise was represented in two high-profile panel discussions that generated strong interest from delegates.

During the Fuel Oil Markets – Projections and Supply Chain Resilience panel, Kenny MacLean, Peninsula’s Chief Operating Officer, highlighted the growing importance of risk management in the bunker industry.

His discussion focused on the role of effective hedging and price risk strategies in an increasingly volatile market environment. He also addressed the high consumption of low-sulphur marine fuels, such as marine gas oil (MGO), within Emission Control Areas (ECAs), alongside the rising demand for biofuels.

Kenny Maclean emphasised that a diverse customer base and a customer-centric approach are critical for bunker suppliers to maintain reliable fuel availability across different regions and market conditions.

In the Role of LNG and its Place in the Global Marine Fuels Market panel, Peninsula’s Head of Alternative Fuels and Sustainability, Nacho de Miguel, joined industry experts to examine LNG’s position as a transitional marine fuel. The discussion explored LNG’s ability to reduce SOx, NOx and particulate emissions, while also acknowledging the infrastructure limitations that currently constrain wider adoption.

The panel underlined the need for continued investment in LNG bunkering and refuelling infrastructure and positioned LNG as a short- to mid-term solution, supporting the sector’s transition while fully renewable marine fuels such as ammonia and hydrogen continue to develop.

Industry Engagement and Innovation at the Exhibition Stand

SIBCON 2024 also provided an excellent opportunity for Peninsula to connect with traders, customers, suppliers and industry specialists. Thousands of visitors engaged with our team at the exhibition stand, enabling meaningful discussions, knowledge exchange and the strengthening of relationships across the global marine fuels value chain. The strong level of interest reinforced Peninsula’s position as a leading company in the marine fuel sector.

A key attraction at the stand was the Wärtsilä barge simulator, which offered delegates the opportunity to experience innovative maritime technology first-hand and gain insight into operational best practice.

Strategic Expansion and Alternative Fuels Development

During SIBCON 2024, Kenny MacLean also spoke with Reuters about Peninsula’s continued expansion in key global bunkering hubs and the company’s parallel focus on alternative fuels.

The interview highlighted the launch of new physical supply operations in Abu Dhabi and Jebel Ali, strengthening Peninsula’s Middle East presence alongside its established operations in Fujairah, as well as the growing role of LNG and biofuels in supporting customers’ decarbonisation strategies across major shipping routes and regions.

Peninsula would like to thank everyone involved in making our participation at SIBCON 2024 such a success and for contributing to productive discussions on market resilience, alternative fuels and the future of global bunkering.
