Peninsula supports Port of Algeciras engagement with Japan’s maritime community

Bringing together industry leaders from Europe and Asia, Peninsula helped drive conversations on shipping’s multi-fuel future.

Peninsula Supports Port of Algeciras in Japan Mission

Peninsula recently supported the Port of Algeciras during a commercial mission to Japan, helping strengthen connections between the Spanish port and one of the world’s most important maritime markets.

The mission included a Spanish Economic Seminar at the Embassy of Spain in Tokyo, where the Port of Algeciras presented its capabilities and future ambitions to representatives from across Japan’s maritime community. The programme included contributions from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH), Maersk, Itochu Corporation, Peninsula and the Algeciras Port Authority.

For Peninsula, the mission provided an opportunity to use its established presence and relationships in Japan to support a strategic partner in building new connections across the market. Peninsula also hosted a get-together as part of the wider commercial mission, bringing members of the delegation and the local maritime community together in Tokyo.

At the Embassy seminar, Nacho de Miguel, Head of Alternative Fuels & Sustainability at Peninsula, delivered a presentation on comprehensive decarbonisation strategy. His contribution supported a wider discussion on the Port of Algeciras’ evolution as a multi-fuel hub and the role that collaboration across the maritime value chain will play in the energy transition.

“Regulation sets the direction. Technology gives us new solutions. And investment makes those solutions possible. That is why I do not believe there will be one single solution. The future of shipping will be multi-fuel,” said Nacho de Miguel, Head of Alternative Fuels & Sustainability at Peninsula.

Handling more than 100 million tonnes of total traffic annually, Algeciras is Spain’s largest port and one of Europe’s leading bunkering hubs. The Port continues to develop its position as a green energy hub, including its ability to support a broader range of marine energy solutions.

Its ambition to expand its multi-fuel capabilities was a central message of the mission, alongside the importance of working with the right partners, including Peninsula and Itochu, to support that development.

Itochu’s participation in the seminar also highlighted the strength of its relationship with Peninsula. The two companies have previously formalised that partnership through IPMA, a joint venture dedicated to looking at the viability of turning ammonia bunkering from an emerging concept into a commercially deliverable marine-fuel solution, initially in Europe and the Mediterranean.

“IPMA also shows that no single company or country can deliver this transition alone. We need partnership. Cooperation between Spain and Japan is a very good example of what we can achieve when we work together,” added Nacho.

Peninsula’s involvement reflects the value of combining global reach with strong local relationships. By connecting customers, partners and maritime communities across regions, Peninsula can help create opportunities that extend well beyond the markets in which those relationships were first built.
